The BC Food Protection Association is providing a one-day Fall Workshop on topics ranging from current and emerging food safety issues to innovative technologies, and the opportunity to network with local food safety professionals from academia, government and industry. In addition, the BCFPA is organizing a Student Poster Competition during the Fall Workshop where students are invited to submit their poster abstract for acceptance to the Fall Workshop, as this is a good opportunity for them to demonstrate the work being done in the area of their expertise.

What your poster should demonstrate:
Projects or research that contributes to food safety and food safety culture in British Columbia

Workshop date and location:
November 7, 2016, at the Delta Hotel Burnaby Conference Centre, Burnaby, BC

Time:
Authors of the posters should be prepared to discuss their work between 12:30-14:00
Posters will be displayed for the entire duration of the event

Guidelines:
Posters should fit on a 4’ x 4’ area
Use visual images where possible
Non-commercial

Deadline for poster abstract submission:
October 3, 2016, email to vicepresident@bcfpa.net

You will be notified by October 10, 2016 if your poster has been approved

250 word limit, single spaced and must adhere to the following format:
Cover letter – Include name, contact information, student status and brief biography
Title of Poster – One line description
Author(s) – Underline the name of the person presenting the poster
Background – State the issue/problem and its impact
Objective/Aim – State the objectives/aims of the research
Methods – Describe the type of study, setting for the study, sample characteristics, methodologies used, how the analysis was conducted, etc.
Results – Key findings from the study (no charts or graphs)
Conclusions – The importance or relevance of the results

The Vancouver Food Bank is looking for someone with:

-Good communication skills who would be responsible to train staff and volunteers on acceptable food donations,

-Food safety, security knowledge who could provide guidance that food safety/quality requirements are met per the regulations and best practice standards,

-Be responsible for inspecting incoming pallets of foods/ donated foods at the warehouse level, and

-Assist with setting up programs surrounding food safety /security issues.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) signed an arrangement with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the Department of Health Canada (Health Canada) recognizing each other’s food safety systems as comparable to each other. The arrangement was signed at a meeting of the FDA-CFIA Health Canada Joint Committee on Food Safety. This is the second time that the FDA has recognized a foreign food safety system as comparable, the first being New Zealand in 2012. A similar system recognition process is underway between FDA and Australia and the European Commission.

By recognizing each other’s systems, FDA, CFIA, and Health Canada, have confidence that they can leverage each other’s science-based regulatory systems. For example, each partner will consider the oversight of the other when prioritizing inspection activities, but the benefits go beyond inspection and admissibility. Systems Recognition establishes a framework for regulatory cooperation in a variety of areas that range from scientific collaboration to outbreak response.
