Anticipating and overcoming food system vulnerabilities in a world beset by climate change, pandemics and geopolitical strife

Talk Summary:
To say that the last 10 years of human history have been tumultuous would be a complete understatement. The COVID-19 pandemic, and a concerning tendency toward multiple, prolonged and even simultaneous manifestations of extreme weather events around the globe have combined to exacerbate the effects from regional wars. Challenges to food supply and distribution have brought about undesirable effects, but there are also opportunities to create lasting transformative change. Critical advances in food security/food literacy are needed that are inextricably linked to accelerated research and development around such topics as: plant-protein-based foods, precision fermentation/biomanufacturing, novel processing technologies, rediscovery of food (food literacy), among others. Big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence represent cross-cutting platforms capable of sparking innovative solutions to many of these challenges.  This talk will outline the above challenges and consider emergent research and technology that holds potential as solutions to our current climate and food system vulnerabilities.
